Background to the group

30 years ago the Department of Transport noted that congestion needed to be dealt with along this stretch of the NCR. Homes and businesses were compulsory purchased but to date no development has taken place. Over time the area has been allowed to run down. We are now faced with an increase in congestion, pollution, rats, fly tipping, derelict buildings and a general shoddy presentation of the area. Over the past 30 years we have seen changes in government at a national and local level but whether we have a Conservative or Labour administration nothing changes - other than the continual run down nature of the area.

The local community has all but given up on the politicians sorting the area out, however it is only through politicians working together, with the community, council officers and Transport for London that we can halt the degeneration and actually begin to improve the area.

Our aims and demands

  1. Transport for London (TfL) to consult with the community appropriately as set out in PPS1.
  2. The present scheme to be re-drawn, taking into account the requirements of the community.
  3. Telford Road (on the westbound side) to be widened to two lanes now. Filtering two lanes of traffic from Bowes Road into one lane of traffic on Telford Road is a major cause of congestion in the area.
  4. Houses owned by TfL to be brought back into use.
  5. For each home that is demolished during any development of any A406 scheme another should be build in the area.
  6. When homes along Telford Road are demolished (and in other places along Bowes Road and North Circular Road) the homes at the back should be protected, taking into account: security, airborne pollution, sound pollution.
  7. TfL to clean Telford Road, Bowes Road and North Circular Road on a regular basis.
  8. The huge profits (estimated £70million) to be made by TfL through the sale of land and property be ploughed back in to the Bowes and lower end of Southgate Green wards. These areas have suffered from lack of investment for many years.
  9. No business should be demolished.
  10. Any road scheme developed in the area should not inhibit the economic viability of the businesses in the area.
  11. Construction of a footbridge to replace the present one outside Bowes Infants School. Positioning of bridge to be further towards the main junction of Wilmer Way/Telford Road.
  12. Stanley Road not to be closed off. A coach bay could be marked out on the NCR, and used on an ad hoc basis, as and when school needs it but, it should not require the permanent closure of Stanley Road.
  13. All local traffic calming measures to be consulted on fully. Enfield Council to work with BTCAG and provide a programme for consultation and implementation.
  14. 20mph zone to be created. Self-enforcement via flashing signals as in Muswell Hill or other appropriate methods.
